Natural Fibers vs. Synthetic

Over the past few years as we have been making making a conscious effort to improve our health and eliminate toxins from our lives I have kept coming back to the issue of synthetic fabrics. I have never fully researches the topic, but have always chosen natural fibers where possible because, well, I'm an old fashioned gal at heart.

I came across this article that spells it out pretty clearly. There are so many toxins in synthetic fabrics! This is convicting for me. We use natural cleaners, detergents, fragrances, and end up spending a pretty penny sometimes to do it, yet I still have a good amount of synthetic fabrics in my home.

Obviously balance is in order, so I am trying to decide what would be best to get rid of. In the article it states that children are more affected than adults. I am getting a bit dizzy thinking of all of the fleece and microfiber baby blankets I have, not to mention the pajamas.

I'm not exactly sure yet what I am going to do with this new information that I have gathered, but I am thinking a good first step would be to eliminate the fleece baby blankets and pajamas. Also, I won't be bringing in any new synthetics. This will get tricky as the time for my wee little girly to arrive draws near. This will be my first girl and my church has told me they plan to throw me a baby shower. I don't want to appear rude by requesting no synthetics, so maybe I will just do an exchange after the fact? I'll have to ponder that a bit.....

That is a tough question, regarding the shower. Maybe you could privately say something to the hostess and tell her that you would prefer natural items? Certainly exchanging items is an option, but that could be a LOT of exhanging.

Are you doing cloth diapers then, too?

Amanda, yes, we do cloth diaper. I am working on my knitting because I would love to knit up some soakers and longies for the little princess! I prefer the natural fibers for diapers and covers too. Although I haven't quite figured out what to do about night time. We have always used Fuzzi Bunz because of the micro-fiber keeping them dry through the night. I don't know if there is a natural alternative to that?

Oh man, I have thought about this issue as well. It's hard. For Elena I did try to keep her blankets 100% cotton. It worked for the most part. But I ended up letting her wear jammies that were fleece just because they seemed so much warmer. *sigh*, I do think it's better to do natural, but it can be hard!
(by the way, I am planning on trying to post that recipe you wanted on my site tomorrow! We have had some issues with our internet so I haven't gotten the chance yet. )

Thanks Kimi, take your time. I won't be able to cook it this week anyway :)
