Cooking With Dry Beans

When I use beans in my cooking, I prefer to use dry over canned. They are more cost efficient, and they make me feel like a pioneer, which is always a main goal. I am slowly but surely perfecting my dry bean skills, and I ran across a tip that I had never heard before.

Don't cook your dry beans with tomatoes, they will not cook through entirely, no matter how long they stay on the stove. My chili a few weeks ago contained suspiciciously tough kidney beans, and I couldn't figure out why until just recently. The beans will still get soft, just not as tender, al dente is the correct word I suppose.

So, when you will be making chili, or anything else with tomatoes, cook your beans first.

Good morning!
I have a question. I made pinto beans in my crockpot last night, and they came out delicious! However, we can only eat so many. I don't want these to go to waste. I was wondering if you had a soup recipe, so I can add the beans to the soup and freeze it. My husband is a truck driver and loves to bring real food on the road!

Sarah,
I would probably turn left over pinto beans into a taco soup or a chili. For taco soup you could add ground beef, or chicken, 1 large can of diced tomatoes, 1 or 2 onions, taco seasoning, and some water or broth. Then serve it with shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, salso, and torilla chips.

I don't often make soups from recipes, I just start throwing things in the pot until it tastes good! I hope this helps.

Thank you Ashley!
I was thinking of just throwing stuff in the pot, too. I'm glad I'm not the only person who does that!
I wanted to ask too...do you have any baby girl names picked out yet?

Sarah, we have had a girl name picked out for five and a half years! We are naming her Clara Virginia Belle. Clara Virginia was my grandmother's name, and I really like the name Belle, so we decided to throw that in there too!

I've always let my dry beans sit in a pot of water overnight and cooked them with other foods the next day. I've never had a problem.

That is so good to know! I think that explains about three dishes that didn't turn out. Ha ha

Ah, yes. I did this once with dried beans - and it took FOREVER for them to cook. (It also made me give up on being a "dry bean" cook for awhile - till I realized the reason)

Thanks for the informative tip.

Blessings,

Ashley, just wanted you to know that my soup came out delicious! We had one jar for dinner last night, and I have four of the huge mason jars full of soup in my deep freezer. I made mine sort of taco-ish (its a word, I made it up!) and its so thick, its sort of like a chili.
Thanks for the advice!

Thank you! This explains why my black bean soup turned out less than brilliant. :) I never could figure it out, since I usually have no problem cooking with dried beans!
